Nomad visas that actually make sense in 2026
Income threshold, validity, tax treatment, renewal pain โ those are the four levers.
How to read a nomad visa
Four metrics matter:
1. Income threshold โ minimum monthly proof of income 2. Validity โ how long the visa runs before renewal 3. Tax treatment โ does the country want to tax your worldwide income? 4. Renewal pain โ leave the country, file in person, or refile online?
Most "nomad visas" lose on at least two of these. Here are the four that don't.
Portugal (D8 nomad visa)
- Income: โฌ3,480/month (~$3,800)
- Validity: 1 year, renewable to 5 years โ permanent residency
- Tax: NHR-style regime ended in 2024 but still favorable for first 10 years
- Renewal: in-person but straightforward
- Best for: nomads who want EU access and an exit door to citizenship
Indonesia (KITAS B211A then E33G)
- Income: $2,000/month proof
- Validity: 1 year (E33G renewable annually for up to 5 years total)
- Tax: 0 % on foreign income
- Renewal: paid agent does most of it, ~$300
- Best for: Bali full-timers who want zero tax friction
Colombia (Migrante visa)
- Income: ~$700/month (10ร minimum wage)
- Validity: 3 years
- Tax: foreign-sourced income generally outside scope for first 5 years if not resident
- Renewal: easy in-country
- Best for: Latin America base on a real salary, not a tech salary
Georgia (Remotely from Georgia + 1-year visa-free)
- Income: $2,000/month proof for the program
- Validity: 1 year (or just stay 1 year visa-free as most passports)
- Tax: 1 % on freelance revenue under "Individual Entrepreneur" (โค โพ500K/year)
- Renewal: leave + re-enter or apply for residence
- Best for: solo entrepreneurs optimizing for tax
Verdict
Run /city/lisbon/, /city/bali/, /city/medellin/, /city/tbilisi/ in the calculator with "Include amortized visa cost" toggled โ these four come out cheapest after factoring visa pain.
